Clinical Decision Support System for Early Osteoarthritis Diagnosis
In most countries, dealing with an aging population’s health considerations has become a major challenge. It is estimated that diseases like Osteoarthritis (OA) which result in chronic disability, affect up to 10% of the entire world population. OA is a degenerative disease, for which there is no cure, but early diagnosis can help delay the degenerative process. Hence, it is also critical to seek specialist treatment well in advance. Given the rising healthcare and insurance costs in most countries, patients often postpone consulting doctors. OA is very often misdiagnosed as simple pain due to fatigue/overwork by inexperienced, non-specialist doctors. Also, clinically diagnosing OA requires expensive and extensive clinical procedures like MRI scans and rheumatological procedures for correct diagnosis. Hence, an automated early diagnosis system comprising of inexpensive clinical diagnostic tools that can reliably detect OA in the early stages, at lower costs and with high accuracy is proposed to be developed.
