Continuous Extraction and Purification of Bio active components from Kokum fruits Share

In the first phase of the project work , the simultaneous extraction of anthocyanin (ACNs), garcinol (GL), isogarcinol (IGL) and hydroxycitric acid (HCA) compounds from the rinds of Garcinia indica (GI) fruit and their partition behaviour was investigated in aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) and  1-propanol-(NH4)2SO4  and 1-propanol and magnesium sulphate systems were identified as suitable systems for the simultaneous extraction of bio-molecules from  Garcinia indica (GI) fruit.

In the second phase, it is proposed to implement the proposed optimized aqueous two phase system in the laboratory scale Rotating disc contactor (capacity-3.5 litter) for the continuous extraction of bio-active components from the fruit extract of Kokum fruits. The process parameters and operating parameters to achieve the higher yield and purity in the continuous process may be studied. The hydrodynamic and mass transfer characteristics will be studied to implement the optimized system. The Characterization and quantification of bio-active components before (in the crude extract) and after extraction and purification will be studied to use the bio-active components in the commercial applications.
